Ok, so my daughter is 17 years old and has been dating the same boy for 3 and a half years. They are great together and I personally (as a single father) think the boy is one of the nicest teens I have ever met. He is both a gentleman and a hard worker and I honestly would not have been surprised (or upset) to see him marry my daughter someday. Last week my daughter came to me crying with the horrible news that Troy had leukimia and was given 10 months to live. It hurt me bad to see her hurting and to know such a great kid has such a bleek future.
So Lauren came to me yesterday (shes very very mature for her age) and said she had something very serious to talk about. I listened. She told me "you know how you always told me to save my virginity for someone special that I love with all my heart? Well Troy is that someone and since he doesn’t have years left on this Earth, we have decided we want to have sexual intercourse soon instead of waiting for marriage. We would both greatly appreciate it if you could take me to the Doctor to get on birth control."
At first I was shocked to hear that they hadn’t had sex yet. (B/c I know when I was 17 I wouldn’t have waited 3 1/2 years to have sex!) But now I am unsure on what to do. Its my little girl! Yes, I know shes growing up and stuff, and I greatly appreciate the fact that she can talk to her father openly about this stuff. So I am asking for your peoples honest opinions…Should I put her on birth control and let her have sex with him b/c if he survives through this, there isn’t a shadow of doubt in my mind they will marry each other and be happy together forever. You have a very strong relationship with your daughter if she is comfortable enough to have this kind of a conversation with her father. You know her better than anyone here at YA and are in the best position to answer your own question.
However, If it was me, and my daughter exhibited the same maturity and restraint has your daughter has, I would put it back on her. I would say, "You are a mature young woman who has always made good choices; I trust you to make your own decisions. Whatever you decide will be right for you and acceptable to me."

She’s 17 therefore is a big enough girl that if she decides to do this, then it is probably right for her. She’s shown great respect in coming to you about it, and as her father I’d say you should let her. She is clearly aware of the risk, and after 3.5 years of being in a relationship I;d say he’s pretty committed. If you don’t let her and her boyfriend dies, it’s probably something she’ll regret for the rest of her life, if he doesn’t and she has then there’s no harm done. It’ll strengthen their relationship if he does survive, and if not at least he’ll die happy.

The Middle of Nowhere is an actual place!!! Please help!?
So it’s a piece of land that has a non English name (Maybe Finnish, Dutch, Polish, Northern Germanic, Swedish…) that translates to English as "Nowhere," "The Middle of Nowhere," and or "Middle of Nowhere." I read about it almost 2 years ago on the internet, but have forgotten how I found the article and the name of the location. I think it might be in the Scandanavian region. the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Finland and even Iceland all ring bells. lol, I’m nuts I know. And I’m pretty sure that the article said that is was a forest. This would mean so much to me if someone could help. It’s for a project.

In Swedish we call it Ingenmansland, which means "no man’s land". It is located on the border between Finland and Russia. My Finnish grandfather used to be stationed there during the war against Russia in the 1930’s.

I cannot for the life of me think of the Finnish name for this area…driving me nuts!

What is the best scope for the savage 10fp .308?
I will hunt deer and pigs with this combination. However will mostly be range shooting. Please nothing about the gun just what scope do you recommend say for under $450?

They may have changed the model numbers, but a Leopold Var-II is a great choice in 3-9 power. It’s in your price range. That’s what we put on my kid’s Savage 30-06.

The nice thing about scopes is you can mount them on just about any firearm. So do yourself a favor and buy a good mid priced quality scope. You can upgrade later if you like or install it on a different firearm anytime. depending on the caliber and terrain of where you hunt should determine just what power scope you should use. Generally..very generally a 3×9x 40 or 50 will do everything you need to do.

Where did the custom start where you flip a cigarette upside down in a new pack?
I started doing it years ago but forgot who turned me onto it. I think it was supposed to be the last cigarette you smoke, or at least, that’s the way I treat it. I’ve also heard that it’s kind of a "secret smokers’" sign, like a secret handshake, that if somebody takes it when you offer them a smoke, they reveal that they don’t respect you.

Do you do it? What does it mean to you?

I’ve always heard it called the "lucky cigarette." I think it started when the smoker opened a new pack and discovered one or more cigarettes got turned upside down while being packed by the company.

I did that for a little while back in 1980, so the custom has been around for a while. That was my "lucky" cigarette and it was saved for last. When I lit it, I made a wish. I’ve never heard of the "secret smokers" thing.

I didn’t do this custom for very long. I had the habit of taking the cigarette out at night and lighting it without looking. Ugh. I hated to absentmindedly light the filter!

why are people selling gold concentrates in bags of dirt, instead of just telling us and helping us where exac?

It’s actually not so easy to locate gold with a metal detector unless you happen to be in an area that lacks many metals *but* gold. When magnetic detector discriminators were installed into new units, the companies discovered what geologists already knew — when exposed to the induction current and magnetic field, gold as a phase response very similar to such simple things as tinfoil, aluminum cans, and a number of alloys. So if you try to tune out the metals you don’t want to find, you can end up tuning out what you really are trying to find. I’m not saying that it can’t be done, just that it works best under rather unique conditions.

But anyway, people sell "cold concentrates" in bags of dirt because (1) most people can’t tell the difference between a small flake of real gold and a small flake of something that looks like real gold (2) even if they are genuinely selling real gold, you can command a better price by advertising one "two pound bag of gold concentrate" than you can by trying to sell, "one quarter of a Troy-ounce of pure gold!" It’s marketing (or cheating). Oh, yes, one more. If they are honestly selling gold, it’s cheaper to sell it in random bags than it is to purify it and make it beautifully presentable.

dog with severe anxiety?
about a year ago I adopted a chihuahua/corgi mix. i work used to work at a pet store and i was offered an opportunity to rescue a homeless puppy.

Tyson has major anxiety issues ever since i got him. any tone of a high voice, even when its not directed at him, he goes into a shock mode, where he runs away and shivers. you can not catch him.

aside from this, he also attacks my two other chihuahuas. Dexter is completely passive to this behavior, and lets Tyson just attack. Danny however, fights back and it gets really nasty. the last time this happened, tyson had him by the back of neck and danny started bleeding.
when we are home, we poor water on them, or put our feet between them to break them up, they dont respond to voices. the last time i tried to grab tyson away, he bit my hand and i bled.

i love all my dogs dearly, i dont want to find them new homes and pass the bad behavior, but i dont want to not be home and have one of these fights go on while im not around.

Please help and give me tips!

i also forgot to mention that whenever i take him to dog parks, (because while he was young i tried to socialize him) he also gets into the that mode, where he just shuts down and shivers, and hides behind my legs. he HATES ALL other dogs. he warms up after a period of time. but at first, he just shuts down.

also, i rescued him when he was only 4 weeks. some friends said it could be a result of not having a mom to naturally train him.

thats very odd. either you leave them in different rooms or get them each crates for now. You must see an animal behaviorist

Sounds like Tyson just needs to gain trust. This can take a looong time for some dogs, sometimes years. Try to socialize him as much as possible and be sure to take them for at LEAST one good, long walk everyday, and make sure they heel! So just be consistent and patient with him and make sure he only has good experiences (for the most part, try your best). As for the attacks, the best way to break up a dog fight involves two people. You each need to grab one dog by the hind legs and start spinning around slowly in a circle so they have to move their feet, and then they cannot turn around and try to bite you. If you don’t have two people, you can use a leash. To do this, thread the end of the leash through the handle and wrap it around the dogs waist and tie the leash to something. Then use the previous maneuver on the other dog. If your gonna use your voice, keep it low and calm. High voices express fear and that will only escalate the fight. If they do end up biting you, you can’t get mad at them because they are in fight or flight mode and are ready to attack anything that gets near them. It’s gonna take a lot of time and effort but you can fix these dogs if you practice everyday. Remember to exercise them a lot and provide them with rules, boundaries, and limitations. Oh yeah, when you leave home, put them in seperate crates in different rooms until you can trust them 110% alone together.
