Hills Have Eyes, TheHills Have Eyes, The (2006)

IMDB rating: 6.50

Plot: Wes Craven produces this remake of his 1977 classic of the same name, about the Carters, an idyllic American family travelling through the great American southwest. But their trip takes a detour into an area closed off from the public, but more importantly from society. An area originally used by the U.S. Government for nuclear testing that was intended to be empty…or so they thought? When the Carter’s car breaks down at the old site, they’re stranded…or are they? As the Carters may soon realize that what seemed like a car casually breaking down, might actually be a trap. This trap might be perpetrated by the inhabitants of the site who aren’t pulling a prank, but are out to set up a gruesome massacre.

For our lost soldiers …..?
Charcoal black smoke cloaked the light blue sky making it difficult to spot the sun setting over the rows of bright green hills. The bemoans of thousands and thousands of men could be heard from the farthest mile of Earth; Countless patriotic enemies rested in agony praying for the same afterlife of peace and love. The bellows from the machine guns released bullets that tore through human skin like a knife through a pillow and introduced true fear that swept through all minds, but all men continued fighting; Keeping their beliefs as close as their guns.

No peace could be rested here upon losers. Those who fail would be sentenced to death, or worse, become a prisoner who’s natural rights as a human being are sadly revoked. I gaped at the number of brothers I had lost so far, each one disguised in red but at the same time at peace with themselves. I admired my surroundings, ignoring the black smoke that took shape of the atmosphere. My water-logged boots sunk in the sand and I began to have flashbacks of my family and I at the beach. The sand was scorching hot, and when I let my feet sink in it they burned as if I had stepped into an oven. The waves crashed one after another, but at that time happiness full-filled the air, joy was about, and the sea wasn’t concealed by a dark maroon color.

I let rounds burst out of my machine gun aimlessly in hopes to hit any random enemy. The stench of salt water was now blocked out by the fatigued smell of death, which caused my senses to grow weary and I felt as if it would all end if I just closed my eyes. I realized dejectedly that I did not want to be here, such a beautiful sight embedded with so much violence and hatred. I waited patiently for my destined bullet to enter through my heart and leave my cold body to lay with my surrounding brothers who have also been put to sleep.

The numbers of my men rapidly declined as I heard desperate screams of "Fall back!" and "Save me God", but there was no sanctuary to fall back to; There was no god answering our pleads for help. I knew from this point on our futures were inevitable, death was going to catch us all in this one. Angry and discombobulated, I stood up, screaming at my enemies that were no further than fifty yards in front of me. I held the trigger on my gun using all my strength to hold down the recoil and continued to scream, my bullets pierced through targets as I watched them stumble back into the dirt. I hated the fact that I was trapped on this island with countless others that intended to kill me, so I no longer showed remorse. Not even for myself.

I stopped screaming. My breathing became faint and I could no longer hear the cries of the men laying around me. I looked down to see blood seeping through my jacket along with blood creeping down my fingers slowly falling off, drop by drop. It seemed as if everything had turned into slow motion and I fell to my knees as I gazed at rows of enemies sprinting towards our last few soldiers. Another bullet ripped through my shoulder and I was forced on my back where I laid and searched for the clouds underneath the smoke. My vision began to blur but as I turned my head to the side I noticed an outstretched body next to me, a pale expressionless face. I stared at the red cross that laid on his helmet and reached my hand out towards the young man’s body.

I grasped the syringe in his pocket and forced it into my leg as the pain began to slowly fade away. No more cries for help, no more muzzle flashes that caused me to blink fast. I thought about my wife and my kids, hoping they would be happy to know that I gave my life for their freedom. Enemies were now running past me yelling in unfamiliar languages and I couldn’t make out any of the words. I just wished I could be home again. I saw the sun just about to set over the horizon and watched it slowly drift further and further under the gigantic hills of green grass. I released my last sigh as I felt myself drifting further and further from reality. "Such a beautiful scene", I whispered under my breath. "Such a beautiful catastrophe to set me free."
