Help!! – where do i stand legally after 5* Horse vetting in uk?
Hi – I have bought a lovely 4 year old Irish Hunter Gelding 3 weeks ago. I had a full 5 stage vetting by my normal vet and he passed fine ( vet said sharp teeth and slight thrush only probs)
Well i noticed when clipping him around a week ago he had a rather large lump (hard boiled egg size) on the outside of his right hock. I wasn’t too concerned at the time as he isnt lame on it, however my friend a very experienced hunts woman has said it could bve a thoroughpin / bog spavin!
This led me to look back on the video of me trying this horse out and lo and behold the lump is there then? Shouldn’t my Vet have picked up on this? Ive rang him and he said he hadn’t noticed anything untoward at the time but it is clearly there on the video only 4 days before he was vetted!
Anyone any ideas where i stand legally with this vet? I paid 5k for this horse and want him for Hunting / Eventing! He’s coming to see the horse tomorrow… should i get a second opinion? please please help!!
Thanks guys for your answers so far… If the vet had of pointed it out so i was informed i may still of bought the horse or maybe not but i defo wouldn’t have paid as much money for it! As i am dam sure that i will not be able to get that money again for him where i to sell him now with another vet doing the vetting… Surely the vet can be held accountable for that , that is what he was there for after all to make me aware of everything potentially wrong with the horse… isn’t that what you pay for along with the actual examination?
You need to contact the seller to see what you can do. I believe that legally the seller has no obligation to take the horse back and give you a full refund.
In I can understand your plight, but in reality a bog spavin is just a cosmetic problem. It doesn’t cause the horse any pain or problems, just looks unsightly. So unless you are going into any conformation classes, I don’t think most people would notice unless under close inspection.

Sounds like you have the run of the mill, not to thorough vet but probably can do nothing about it, They are still practicing Veterinarian Physicians.

If it is purely cosmetic, won’t interfere with the purpose for which he was bought, and even you didn’t see it when you first checked him over, I’m not sure there’s anything you can actually do about it.
Hope he comes OK soon
Good Luck

Unfortunately when you pay for a vet check they often don’t mention or worry about cosmetic issues such as a bog spavin. That is one of the reasons to look closely at the horse yourself and then ask the vet to look at anything you find suspicious. Because it’s not a soundness issue you probably don’t have a legal case. I’ve had 5* vettings that don’t find everything or mention blemishes such as old calcium deposits/small scars/windpuffs etc. He’ll probably be just fine but if it makes you feel better to get a 2nd opinion do so.
