USA #37 in Health Care by Dark Spinner

cialis

The health care system has serious problems. Costs are rising at three times the inflation rate. Many Americans are uninsured. Millions more fear losing their insurance in a weak economy or because of preexisting conditions. Doctors are ready to close their doors because of high malpractice insurance costs and low government reimbursement rates.

Everyone agrees that something has to be done. But the reform proposals pending in Congress would make a bad situation worse. These bills would cause us to slide rapidly down the slippery slope toward increasing government control of health care. They contain the biggest expansion of Medicaid since the program's creation. They impose an unprecedented federal mandate for coverage backed by the enforcement authority of the Internal Revenue Service. They will increase government spending by nearly $2 trillion when fully implemented. They give the secretary of health and human services the power to define benefits for all private plans and to redefine those benefits annually. From a new health-choices commissioner to a center for comparative-effectiveness research, these bills create dozens of new bureaucracies, increasing the federal role in health care. All of this amounts to a lot of power over people's lives.

The House bill includes a government-run plan; the Senate's bill may yet. A government-run plan would eventually drive private insurers out of business and lead to a government takeover of the health care system. A government-run plan is not necessary for health care reform unless your goal is to use the government's power to drive down costs by rationing care and slashing payments to providers. In addition to limiting health plan choices and infringing on the doctor–patient relationship, a government-run system would guarantee U.S. taxpayers a staggering tax burden for generations to come.

Even worse, the bills fail to solve the fundamental problems in health care. They take no serious steps to reduce costs, either for the health care system or for individuals. The bills will cause insurance premiums for scores of people, especially those who are relatively young and healthy, to go up, not down. They tighten the allowable price variation for insurance rates, so that millions of people who are expecting lower costs as a result of reform will end up paying higher premiums.

The bills also impose new fees and taxes that will be pushed directly onto the consumer. Totaling about a half-trillion dollars over the next few years, these fees and taxes will cause premium increases as early as 2010, even before most reforms take effect. Then, after forcing premiums to go up, the legislation makes it mandatory to buy health insurance.

The bills also make problematic changes in Medicare. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the legislation imposes higher premiums for prescription-drug coverage on seniors and the disabled. The Senate Finance Committee bill creates a new, permanent Medicare commission with broad authority to make further cuts in Medicare. The damage that this group of unelected people could do to Medicare is unknown, although the top actuary at the Department of Health and Human Services recently concluded that cuts of this magnitude will limit benefits and decrease access to care for Medicare beneficiaries.

These points are good examples of the philosophical difference between the two sides. Some of us want to reduce the overall cost of the legislation, try to reduce the government's role, make it harder for illegal immigrants to get benefits, allow alternatives to the individual mandate and harsh penalties, and reward states with extra Medicaid dollars if they pass medical malpractice reform. Instead, the prevailing plan is to move millions of people from private coverage into public coverage and create new taxpayer-funded subsidies for families making close to $100,000 a year. Yet even with all the changes, after raising billions of dollars in new taxes, cutting a half-trillion dollars from Medicare, imposing stiff new penalties on people who don't buy insurance, and increasing costs for those who do, 25 million people will still not have health insurance under the Senate Finance Committee bill, and 18 million people will not have it under the House bill, according to the CBO. I don't think this is what the American people had in mind when the President and Congress promised to fix health care.

It's not too late for bipartisan legislation that builds on common ground to improve coverage and affordability, increase quality, and decrease costs. I've worked for years on bipartisan legislation that would change Medicare so that it paid not for the volume of services provided but for the quality of the care delivered. There's also widespread support for health insurance exchanges and for ending discrimination based on preexisting conditions to make coverage more affordable and accessible. Allowing individuals to purchase insurance across state lines and enabling small businesses to band together when shopping for insurance are also proven methods for reducing costs and should be included as part of comprehensive reform.

Tort reform is another necessary component, since it would reduce abusive lawsuits that drive up costs and limit access to doctors. The CBO estimates that comprehensive medical liability reform would reduce federal budget deficits by roughly $54 billion over the next 10 years. The Democratic Congressional leaders have shown little interest in creating an environment in which doctors don't have to engage in defensive medicine just to keep their practices open. The medical community should continue to argue for reasonable reforms that would cut down on unnecessary medical tests that serve no purpose other than to reduce malpractice premiums.

On several occasions, Republicans tried to take the legislative substance in a different direction. We tried to ensure that the President's pledge not to tax middle-income families, seniors, or veterans would be carried out. We were rebuffed every step of the way.

And amendments offered by Republicans on the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) panel and the Finance Committee to provide consumers with a lower-cost coverage alternative, similar to the high-deductible health plans and health savings accounts sold today, were consistently defeated. Those alternatives would have allowed more people to keep their existing coverage. The defeat of these amendments and the forthcoming pressures on employers and individuals mean that despite the President's promises, a lot of people aren't actually going to be able to “keep what they have.” In fact, given the long list of new benefit mandates and strict new actuarial-value requirements, a lot of people are going to end up paying more to meet the government's new definition of health insurance.

Congressional Democratic leaders are advancing their extremist health care reforms with the bare minimum of votes. I disagree with that approach. Health care is one sixth of our economy — as large as the entire British economy. The legislation Congress is considering will affect every American, at every level of health and at every stage of employment. When the debate began, interested legislators of both parties set forth benchmarks that were no-brainers: Health care reform should lower premium costs, reduce the deficit, and bend the cost curve the right way. The bills before Congress don't do any of these things.

It's not too late to step back and start again. If both sides can set aside some philosophical differences and refocus on the principles that brought us to the table months ago, we can implement health care reform that improves the quality of life for those Americans who are suffering under the current system and that doesn't degrade the quality of life for everyone else.

What Does Cobra Mean

Cobra is a health coverage given to unemployed workers. The recent unemployment bill that passed did not extend to the unemployed an extension of their Cobra premiums. The Cobra bill that was aimed at paying the health premiums for unemployed workers did not pass and is not a part of the unemployment bill that did pass. Senators voting against the bill are not willing to continue paying almost 65% of health insurance premiums for unemployed workers that would be paid by the federal government adding to the ever increasing and threatening federal debt.

Is Cobra A Political Bill

The Cobra Health Bill which was not a part that was passed of the unemployment extension bill recently passed by the Senate has become politically charged with only one Democrat voting against it with all other votes against the Cobra bill coming from Republicans. The frightening prospect of paying not only unemployment benefits but health benefits to more than 10% of the American population is having some debate in the Senate.

Polish extreme metallers Quo Vadis, not to be confused with the Canadian band of the same name, have released the music video for their new single “Blood For Oil.” The song comes off of the band's new album “Infernal Chaos” which was released this past June.

The video can be viewed below:

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

One of my favorite shows of all time is Behind the Music on VH1. I don’t even know if they still record original episodes of this show, but it was a fantastic show. I loved the back stories of all of my favorite bands. I loved hearing how they all came together and how they all broke up.

My three favorite Behind the Music episodes were about bands that basically fell apart because of crazy love triangles. It’s so sad that a woman can tear a band apart, but in these three stories they did.

Fleetwood Mac

The relationship between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham is a tragic rock ‘n roll love story, but it makes for good music– and a good episode of Behind the Music. Fleetwood Mac is one of my favorite bands of all time and this is one of my favorite performances of all time.

The Mamas and the Papas

Such a fun sing-along kind of band. For a girl who loves to harmonize, this band is so much fun to listen to. They were also torn apart by a love triangle between Michelle Phillips, Denny Doherty, and John Phillips. And Mama Cass Elliot was reportedly always in love with Denny Doherty. What a mess.

But, boy, could they sing!

Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship

Grace Slick and her ways with her male band mates make this such an interesting story! And I love listening to Somebody to Love and White Rabbit on repeat!

I’m going to sound like an old lady for a second, but they just don’t make music like they used to. Thank goodness for old episodes of Behind the Music.

Did you watch Behind the Music? Do you have a favorite episode?

British heavy metal legends Iron Maiden has posted their new music video online for the song, “The Final Frontier.” You can check it out below. The song is the title track from the band's forthcoming fifteenth studio album, which will be released on August 16th.

It was the night before the big decision when I declared on Twitter that LeBron James ego was too big to go to Miami to join Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in the pursuit of an NBA championship. Boy was I wrong. His ego was so big he had to bring his talents to South Beach. It's not like he didn't warn us, he said he wanted to be in a place where he had the best chance of getting a ring ASAP. A chip by any means necessary. Damn, the ghost of Kobe Bryant hangs over these young hoopsters. He's got 5 rings—ask Cam'Ron. D Wade has only one. And Bron Bron, zero, zilch. You know Pat Riley was talkin' that shit. “You're not Jordan, kid. You're right to want to change that number. You're Magic. Big, strong, can run the point for most of the game. You'll dish assists out, hit clutch baskets and we'll stack championships. Six in a row, I promise you. It's a dynasty Jigga can't deliver. Fuck the money, we got the cars and the hoes.” Yup, Riles is a slick muthafucka, he brought my Knicks almost back to the top in the 90s. Then he bailed on us with a faxed resignation. He broke our hearts just like Gloria's baby boy did. So I guess you fuckers deserve each other. Good luck to you and the “Scheme Team”. Dolan's a dickhead so I know why you passed but I got one last wish tho: I don't ever want to see you with a Yankee hat on again. Ha. Who rocks a Miami Heat fitted? Fuck outta here.

Lady Gaga - Poker face by netmen.

lady gaga

Janelle Monae is better than Lady Gaga? Blasphemy!

Universities are now preaching the greatness of Gaga, and most of America has never heard of Ms. Monae. Your claim is ludicrous, Fruzsi.

Ah – but read me out. If you were to compare both ladies on their craft, you will see that Janelle Monae is actually the more talented artist.

Dancing:

Lady Gaga cannot do the moon walk. Lady Gaga does poses really quickly, and maybe does a little hip wiggle in her videos. Meanwhile, Janelle Monae does feats of slight footwork- including moonwalking. Monae doesn’t have dancers and fancy choreography masking her inability to dance. Jezebel recently wrote a piece titled “Why Has Dancing Become So Boring in Pop Videos” and surprise, Janelle Monae was the single exception.

Singing:

Ms. Monae clearly has the the superior voice. Lady Gaga sounds the same in every song, while Ms. Monae can change the tone of her voice and still sound wonderful. Case in point, the “Many Moons” short film embedded below showcases Ms. Monae’s various voice talents. Lady Gaga saying “Roma” does not count.

Songwriting/ Storytelling:

Do I really need to mention again how Lady Gaga’s music videos have nothing to do with her music? We can all agree Lady Gaga’s lyrics are vapid, perhaps intentionally. Though her rhymes may be cute (“bluffin’ with my muffin”), her content is crass and unoriginal.  You could say this is because Lady Gaga is a postmodernist, and it is up to the viewer/ listener to determine and create meaning in her work. I call Lady  Gaga’s post modernist craft lazy, because it is very easy to throw shit together in a music video and count on misinformation to create a story .  Sure, Lady Gaga’s interviews do come off as postmodern, with her “challenging gender roles”, but Janelle Monae challenges gender roles too and doesn’t indulge in vague, sex-drenched or shocking spectacle.

Janelle Monae builds whole worlds for her albums based off her android dreams. Janelle Monae sings about the future, class differences and forms of prejudice. What does Gaga do with her position of power, beside sing about sex and telephone reception?

Originality:

This category is tricky, because every artist these days borrows from someone else. So, being as I am somewhat of a “feminist” (hide your eyes, insecure men!), this category is going to focus on rise to fame and sex appeal. Lady Gaga is naked in every music video, and has some controversy only the religious right care about in every video. She is relatively pretty, blonde and white. Lady Gaga teaching kids it’s okay to be different? Hardly. Nancy Bauer recently wrote in an opinion piece titled “Lady Power” (choice bits below, the whole piece is worth reading):

Gaga wants us to understand her self-presentation as a kind of deconstruction of femininity, not to mention celebrity.

And since Gaga herself literally embodies the norms that she claims to be putting pressure on (she’s pretty, she’s thin, she’s well-proportioned), the message, even when it comes through, is not exactly stable.  It’s easy to construe Gaga as suggesting that frank self-objectification is a form of real power.

Lady Gaga idealizes this way of being in the world.  But real young women, who, as has been well documented, are pressured to make themselves into boy toys at younger and younger ages, feel torn.

Leave it to Simone de Beauvoir to take her lifelong partner Sartre to task on this very point… When it comes to her incredibly detailed descriptions of women’s lives, Beauvoir repeatedly stresses that our chances for happiness often turn on our capacity for canny self-objectification.  Women are — still — heavily rewarded for pleasing men.  When we make ourselves into what men want, we are more likely to get what we want, or at least thought we wanted.

Lady Gaga is more popular because her brand of sex is familiar. When I look at Lady Gaga, I know how I am supposed to look and behave to be a “boy toy” or a heavily jeweled “ornament“.  When comparing Lady Gaga to Janelle Monae,  Lady Gaga is just turning the same old tricks with a whole lot more sparkle (and the occasional cheesy fire effects).  Janelle Monae on the other hand, wears a suit, gives off a female Elvis Presley vibe and has a penis -type hairdo. Janelle Monae doesn’t give a shit about traditional sex appeal or sacrificing her artistic vision to “please men”.   Says Janelle Monae in an LA Times interview:

“It’s time to redefine what sexy can be, and what a woman can wear, how she wears her hair, what shoes she chooses,” said Monáe, whose signature pompadour has inspired some to compare her to Grace Jones. “I’m about uniting and helping people become comfortable with who they are. Because there are young girls out there right now going through identity crises.”

via Ann Power’s Janelle Monae in Wondaland

And that way of thinking is super sexy. (Full disclosure: I have a raging girl crush on Janelle Monae) As for why the public hasn’t caught on to Janelle Monae? I can only guess the American public (including music execs)  lack the intelligence to appreciate Ms Monae’s work.

To conclude:

Janelle Monae is a level 18 bard, while Lady Gaga just recently obtained level 7 ( “Hypnotize” and “Fascinate the undead” are her main skills). If I was drawing together my party to save the world (because bards are important, don’t believe what any one says), I would pick Janelle Monae over Lady Gaga any day.

Lady Gaga is ready to top the charts again. The pop star has announced the US release of her hit international album of remixes. Lady Gaga — The Remix is set for release next month, Interscope Records said Thursday.

The album, scheduled to drop stateside in Aug. 3, was released internationally earlier this year and has already sold over 500,000 albums since topping the charts in the United Kingdom, Japan, and Canada.

The US version of The Remix will featured reworked editions of 10 songs first featured on Gaga’s platinum-selling albums The Fame and The Fame Monster, including hits such as “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” “LoveGame,” “Paparazzi,” “Bad Romance,” “Telephone” and “Alejandro.”

White Tulips for a Friend by jon.noj

When it comes to catching crooks, forensic science has come a long way.

From Fingerprints To Hand Bacteria

Back in the late 1800s, detectives first started using fingerprints to identify criminals. More recently, during the past few decades, DNA has become an important tool for crime scene investigators.

Now, bacteria may have their day. Hand bacteria, that is–as in the unique mix of bacteria that live on a person’s hands.

Bacterial Cells

The human body is teeming with bacteria. In fact, there are more bacterial cells in our bodies than human cells.

Researchers have found that our hands harbor around 150 bacterial species. But the specific variety of bacteria is largely unique to each hand. Only about 13 percent of bacteria found on a given hand is shared with any other hand.

Capturing Hand Bacteria

But can a person’s unique signature of hand bacteria be used to identify them, much like DNA? A handful of experiments say yes.

For example, researchers at the University of Colorado, Boulder took bacteria samples from computer keyboards.

They compared them to hand bacteria samples taken from the computers’ users, and to samples taken from people who’d never used the keyboards. The keyboard samples matched up much better with bacteria from the computer owners’ than they did with bacteria from strangers.

The Future

More studies need to be done to see if hand bacteria really are useful as a forensic tool. But as a complement to DNA and fingerprints, it could prove a reliable way to put away the bad guys.

Usually on my day off I am busy doing web related work and riding test bikes and parts. Well, my co-worker, Craig had told me that he wanted to go check out Cedar Bend Park and well…….it was too nice out to work!

So I rode a bike just for fun!

I decided to give ol' Grimace the call up today, the 2007 Salsa Cycles El Mariachi with the Gun Kote finish and the purple Chris King head set I was gifted by George Wissell. As always, it rode awesome!

Craig and I had a great time riding, and Grimace was behaving well, climbing up all the steeps and handling like a champ. Funny thing about this bike is that it is a medium. Salsa Cycles  did things a wee bit differently back then, and I prefer the old medium over a large. (I'd definitely ride a large now!) It reminds me a bit of how things were sized in the 90's. A bit shorter top tube, a bit longer stem. I slapped on the 47mm offset On One fork on this too. Makes the Salsa come alive, and this bike just rips single track. The Industry 9 single speed wheels are great, and the free hub sounds like a cicada in August. Amazingly buzzy and loud. Someday I may upgrade to a titanium seat post, but this ThudBuster is a great post on this bike. Makes my back happy, it does!

Anyway, Craig and I decided a stop for something to drink afterward was in order. We pulled into the Janesville convenience store and what to my surprise did I see but my old “Dirty Blue Box”! I was floored! Someone decided it was worth fixing up and driving. Cool! It even had all my old cycling related stickers still on the end gate too! A little worse for the wear, perhaps. It was missing the entire rear bumper, and the right front fender was wrinkled, but when the lady who was driving it started it up, she sounded like a champ.

Don't get me wrong! I am waaaay better off with the “Truck Without A Name”, but it was cool to see an “old friend” that I had spent tons of hours and thousands of gravel miles in still alive and kicking.

I spent the rest of my day with Mrs. Guitar Ted, who also had the day off. We had lunch, and then I took her to the jewelry store to look for something special. See, Mrs. Guitar Ted has completed all her course work for her B.S. in Nursing at a local college, so I am going to get her something special to commemorate her graduation, which takes place in August.

Strangers, Friends by Ravages

http://stevenso.buzznet.com/

Do you know what happens if a person has a good online experience?

They just might pass it on to a friend while encouraging that friend to forward it to their friends.

That my friends is what makes viral marketing so powerful.

There are many free advertising resources available to online marketers. What most people do not realize is that they can get their marketing message sent out to a targeted group of people by using viral marketing tactics and best of all, it is free!

So what is viral marketing all about? By following these suggestions you may find that viral marketing can be an effective part of your marketing campaign.

1. The most common type of viral marketing is when people share quality experiences with friends. Some examples are software products, online services, online marketing tools, free advertising resources, etc. The product or service must be beneficial enough to encourage people to want to share it with others.

2. If you want to have your viral email message forwarded frequently then you should place a relevant marketing offer in every outgoing email message. It is important to make sure that the incentives are good enough and that the people getting them feel that they are of sufficient quality to avoid any displeasure or backlash. Your offer should be something specific, such as free software, an e-book, or maybe a promotional item that you have available for your company.

3. One way to avoid complaints is not to consider a name and address that is received through viral marketing as an opt in. This means that after the referral email is sent you should not add them to any subscription list. Ask them in the referral email if they would like to receive future mailings, allowing them to opt in.

4. Response rates increase dramatically when people see that a message is coming from someone they know. So, personalize your referral emails. The subject is important because it can identify an email as friendly. The subject line should show three things about the email. It should identify the email as an advertisement, that it includes a special offer and that the email was sent from a friend.

5. If you can understand what makes a marketing message worthy of being passed along to others and incorporate it into your offer or program then you will be able to drive traffic to your website.

6. Your website can also be used to take advantage of viral marketing. Create informative articles and post then to free article sites. Make sure the title is unique and that at least one link to your website appears in the article. Do not forget to have an Email This Page To A Friend link on your website, you can find the code out on the Internet.

Another suggestion is to write free articles for a website that is related to your topic of interest. Especially one with a good newsletter or that distributes articles.

7. Email newsletters are a great way to enjoy the benefits of viral marketing. By providing quality information in your newsletter, readers will be more likely to pass it on to their friends. Remember to always include a Send to a Friend link in your newsletter along with a Subscribe to Newsletter link. This will make it easier for you to gather new subscribers to your newsletter.

8. Viral marketing can be extremely useful for a one time campaign, but it can also be a great tool for expanding your business over time. Whether your goal is branding or to drive more visitors to your website you can use viral marketing in a manner to encourage others to pass along your messages.

9. Viral marketing is something that happens naturally, your message should be something of interest while offering something valuable in order for your message to be successful.

10. What it comes down to is that your viral message must be perceived as having value. To most of us entertainment has value. We all like fun, interactive content that inspires us to pass it on to a friend. How many jokes have you received in your inbox?

So, should you try to incorporate viral marketing into your email campaigns? Yes! There is no doubt about it, viral marketing will allow you to reach more than just your target audience and without much cost. Just remember that viral marketing is another strategy to be used in your online marketing campaign and is one small step toward achieving your objectives.

One last thought. Your viral marketing message can offer one of the most amazing incentives around and contain some of the best content found on the Internet, but if people visit your website and do not get what was promised, you may just see viral marketing at its worst.

Feel free to forward this to a friend.

I’ve always said one the the greatest injustices in life is that we’re doing well to get 12 years from a great dog while some of our most troublesome family members seem to live forever.

Mike Blair only got 10 years with Java, his chocolate Lab.

Click here to see his tribute to his buddy that recently passed.

Mike, as many of you know, has been a highly-talented photographer with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks for many years. He made the switch to video admirably. About twice a week his works get top-billing on the department’s website – www.kdwp.state.ks.us.com.

A guy who personally and professionally spends a lot of time wandering the Kansas countryside, Blair probably shared a lot of that time with Java. Shots on the tribute video show the dog in the seat beside him.

Good for both of them. Labs are born to be buddies and with their “pack” as much as possible, not left behind in a backyard or small kennel.

I know the bond because, like Mike ,I spend a lot of time trolling in the backcountry. As often as possible, Hank’s with me.

Sorry for your loss, Mike, but I hope you get another puppy as soon as you can. People like you are like angels to a dog.

That’s one reason why Java was so special.
