British holidaymakers who chose to vacation in the United States this year were pleasantly surprised at how cheap it was due to the weakness of the U.S. dollar. For the most part British tourists were getting close to two dollars for each British pound. Even with the increased cost of gasoline, tourists in the U.S. were able to get pretty good deals. Though air fares are going up and some transatlantic flights may be cut back, it is still possible to take advantage of the weak dollar. If you are planning to book a holiday in the U.S. later this year or in 2009, keep in mind that the dollar has begun to climb a bit and may continue to do so.
Don’t be put off, however. The U.S. continues to be a great holiday destination. There is so much to see and do in the States. Cities from New York to San Francisco offer enormous variety. If it is culture you want, New York has great museums, including the Metropolitan and the MOMA. Broadway’s theaters offer something for everybody. Even off-Broadway is a mecca for cutting edge entertainment. Shopping in New York is legendary. From Saks Fifth Avenue to Bloomingdales and from Macy’s to Century 21, New York is unparalleled.
On the west coast take your pick. Los Angeles with its movie culture and San Francisco featuring Nob Hill and cable cars and the stunning Bay vistas greet residents and tourists alike. A few miles to the north and you are in the wine country of Napa and Sonoma. Don’t overlook what falls between the coasts. The Grand Canyon will take your breath away, as will Monument Valley and the Painted Desert. Nestled in the Sierras is the famed Lake Tahoe. Tahoe is the skiing destination on the west coast, and the view of the lake from the slopes of Heavenly Valley is stunning. In the summer the gondolas ferry tourists to the top of the mountain where they can spend a day or several hours taking on spectacular sights.
Don’t forget Las Vegas with its over-the-top casinos and hotels. You can spend days taking in a dizzying array of luxury hotels like the Bellagio and Circus Circus, which features its own amusement park.
Speaking of amusement parks, the two most visited parks in the world are in the U.S.: Disneyland in Anaheim and Disney World in Florida. As always, Disney has new and more exciting attractions in the works at any given time. Whether you stay at a Disney hotel located within the parks or a nearby hotel, the Disney experience is not soon forgotten. If that is your preference, be sure to check out whatever special deals the parks are offering. You may be surprised at how affordable a Disney vacation can be.
Seeing what is on before you visit the US is a breeze these days, not only do travel sites have lots of information but personal experiences are blogged at the most popular blogs for travel.
Though Disney is still the leader of the pack, other amusement parks are worth visiting as well. Universal Studios and MGM Studios both feature Hollywood extravaganzas. You can find yourself in the middle of a Spiderman episode or an Indiana Jones adventure.

The U.S. is such an expansive and diverse experience that just traveling from region to region illustrates this better than anything else. From the Old South to the Yankee Northeast and from the Midwest to the Northwest, the differences are both noticeable and distinct. Regional differences are pretty much defined by geography. The geography within U.S. boundaries runs the gamut from lush green forests to deserts, to endless plains and mountain ranges.
So if you are contemplating a holiday and deciding where to spend it, give the U.S. a good bit of thought. Even with a strengthening dollar it may still be well within your budget. Take out the calculator and do some Internet surfing to get the latest deals in all the areas you find attractive. If you plan ahead and book early, good deals can be had.

Soldiers prepare to send bodies of four comrades, journalist back to Canada

KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan — The deaths of four Canadian soldiers and a journalist in a roadside bombing two days before the New Year ushers in a sombre 2010 for many Canadians.

Sgt. George Miok, 28, Sgt. Kirk Taylor, 28, Cpl. Zachery McCormack, 21, and Pte. Garrett William Chidley, 21, were killed Wednesday when their armoured vehicle hit an improvised explosive device four kilometres south of Kandahar City. Michelle Lang, a Calgary Herald reporter covering the conflict for Canwest News Service, also died in the attack.

Five others were wounded, including four soldiers and a Canadian civilian worker.

The fallen soldiers were widely praised Thursday as dedicated and passionate men who cared for their comrades and their country.

Lang will be honoured alongside them in a formal ramp ceremony at Kandahar Airfield Friday before their aircraft takes off to bring them home. The bodies are expected to arrive back in Canada on Sunday afternoon, landing at Canadian Forces Base Trenton. From there, they’ll travel in a convoy along the Highway of Heroes, a 172-kilometre stretch of Highway 401 between Trenton and Toronto.

“Michelle will be transported back with our four lost soldiers,”said Lt.-Col. Chris Lemay. “We think it’s the right thing to do. This is the first reporter who was part of the embed program that we’ve lost. This is a first for the Canadian Forces.”

Brig.-Gen. Daniel Menard, Commander of Task Force Kandahar, offered heartfelt words about each of the victims.

Miok, based in Edmonton, was remembered as a “dedicated” officer who was well-liked by his troops. “The welfare of his soldiers came first, and they knew they could turn to him for advice and guidance.”

Taylor, based in Yarmouth, N.S., was known as “Sgt. Morale” because of his sense of humour and calm demeanour.

“He enjoyed a challenge, and though he didn’t seek the spotlight, he would take the difficult jobs without complaint,” said Menard, adding Taylor was passionate about his job mentoring troubled youth back home in Canada.

“He brought the same enthusiasm with him to Afghanistan.”

Chidley, born in Cambridge, Ont., and raised in Langley, B.C., could always beat his friends and fellow soldiers at video games. “He was a great driver, the one you wanted for difficult tasks,” said Menard.

Cam Chidley wrote about his son on Facebook Thursday: “My ex-wife Sian and I have lost our son Garrett in Afghanistan yesterday. God help us and please watch over our daughter Devon, and our son Joe.”

McCormack, based in Edmonton, was remembered as a team player who was passionate about his family and looking forward to soon marrying his fiancee.

“He was a very caring individual who always lent a helping hand to others,” Menard said. “He always had a way of raising morale by making the rest of the section laugh.”

Lang, too, was soon to be married.

In a statement he released Thursday, Lang’s fiance said her death “is the darkest and most painful moment of my life.

“I am absolutely devastated by the loss of my dearest Michelle — my partner, my best friend, and the love of my life,” said Michael Louie.

Louie, said he’s been overwhelmed with messages of condolences.

“It makes me feel really good to see all the people that Michelle has impacted or has touched,” he said. “It comes as no surprise to me whatsoever, though.”

Although new to Kandahar, Menard said Lang “touched many of us” through her sensitivity and ability to connect with people.

“Michelle . . . was a young, dynamic reporter who strove to excel at her job,” he said. “[She] was passionate about life and inspired those around her.”

Lang, 34, was just two weeks into her first stint in Afghanistan and was the first Canadian journalist to die there since the Canadian military mission began in 2002.

Brig.-Gen. Michael P. Jorgensen, commander Land Force Western Area, praised the soldiers and Lang for their sacrifice.

“The thoughts and prayers of the entire military family are with those brave soldiers who were killed or wounded, with their families and with Michelle Lang of the Calgary Herald and her family,” Jorgensen said. “Journalists embedded with our troops in Afghanistan take the same risks and expose themselves to the same dangers and discomforts as our soldiers do. They should be commended for this, as they, too, leave the comforts of their Canadian lives and their families to report from Afghanistan.”

Wednesday was an especially bloody day in Afghanistan. In addition to the attack on the Canadians, eight American civilian workers died in a suicide bomb attack on a U.S. military base close to the border with Pakistan, officials said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for both attacks. “This work is done by us,” Yusuf Ahmadi, a spokesman for the Islamist insurgent group, told AFP.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper recognized the “heavy hearts” of Canadians and offered his sympathies.

“The five men and women who perished are true Canadian heroes,” Harper said.

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff said it was “with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of four brave Canadian soldiers and a Canadian journalist in Afghanistan . . . Their service exemplifies the very best in courage and selflessness, and their deaths will not be forgotten as our mission to build a safe and secure country for the people of Afghanistan continues.”

“Our country has suffered a terrible tragedy in the loss of Canadian journalist Michelle Lang and four brave soldiers. … My thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends and loved ones,” said NDP Leader Jack Layton.

Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean, too, reacted with sadness to the deaths and injuries.

“It reminds us of the underhanded, blind, daily violence facing our Canadian soldiers, journalists and humanitarian workers in Afghanistan, who are working alongside the local population already hard hit by decades of terror.

“Our thoughts are with the families, the loved ones and the colleagues of the deceased. We also wish the injured a prompt recovery.”

Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai offered his condolences Thursday.

“The Afghans will not forget your sacrifice,” Karzai said in statement reported by Canadian Press. “Your children sacrificed their lives for the people of Afghanistan and the threat of terrorism.”

The deaths bring the toll of Canadian soldiers to 138 since the mission there began in 2002.

At least 17 journalists from around the world have been killed in Afghanistan since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, according to statistics maintained by the Committee to Protect Journalists, an independent, non-profit organization.

Spain’s Balearic Islands Tempt The Brits

The number of UK visitors to the Spanish island of Majorca and her sister island of Menorca is at record highs – so what exactly is drawing more and more Britons to the islands?

Besides the bright, warm sunshine, sandy beaches and the warm waters of the Mediterranean? What more could anyone ask for? How about the fact that the largest island in the Balearic Islands Majorca is less than a three hour flight from the land of fog and mist that, while green most of the year, can wear on even the staunchest English personalities.

Besides that, Majorca, or Mallorca as many people call it, is an island that beckons travellers and then induces them to stay. The island groups, whose immediate neighbours include the islands of both Menorca and Ibiza have been drawing tourists and vacationers since the 1960s. It has, and continues, to promise ports of call for ocean liners, as well as major airports located near Palma de Mallorca, is destination for those seeking a glimpse into a rich history that still exists on the island despite its popularity with travelers. A blend of ancient and modern lives side by side, and visitors and residents can enjoy the history found in the 14th century Gothic cathedral near Palma, while those seeking a little more life may find plenty of excitement on streets filled with shops, taxis and beaches calling their names.

British expatriates living in Spain, and the islands of Majorca and Menorca especially, are finding true homes away from home in the southern climes with many buying real estate and Menorca property as they attempt to reclaim little bits of calm amid growing populations, political machinations and the good old rat race. Nearly one million Britons have made their desires known that they will be moving to southern destinations this year alone, for extended vacations or permanently, and the growing number of those Britains who have registered to vote in Spain has risen by about 20 percent every year.

The trend toward expatriates becoming more involved with their new local governments and politics is also growing. Not only are Britains moving toward southern destinations, but other countrymen as well, including Romanians and immigrants from South America, Morocco and the Guineas. Spain seems to be the new frontier for many weary inhabitants of the crowded towns and cities of not only Great Britain and Europe, but for those on the other side of the globe as well. While this trend bodes well for the Spanish economy, no one yet knows what sort of impact the influx of expatriates will do for Spain’s political destiny.

Today, in 2007, nearly one million former British citizens call Spain their new home, and nearly a quarter of those are eligible to vote in Spanish elections. While they are allowed to vote on national issues, they are still curtailed from voting in local or regional elections, but that may change in the near future as more immigrants arrive on the sun-soaked sands of islands like Majorca, where British voting trends have decided the results of some elections already.

The San Fulgencio area, located in the Alicante province of Spain, currently heads the lead in foreigners calling Spain home now, with three quarters of them being British. Majorca and Menorca continue to be the most popular destinations for many Britains looking for new homes, new horizons and new destinies, and only time will tell what this means overall for the Spanish people.
