Five Easy Pieces (1970) IMDB rating: 7.50 Plot: Bobby Eroica Dupea (Jack Nicholson) comes from a well-bred family of musicians, and once showed great promise as a concert pianist. By nature a restless, angry individual, Bobby left his family and his music when he could no longer endure the dull, cloistered routine of daily practice. He took to the road, wanting to “see the world,” and hopefully find something or someone to quell his inner turmoil. Someone please help me! Should this "friendship" be over?
In march a friend i was close with nearly got evicted. He had a huge public service bill and his landlord told him if he couldn’t pay it all he would be evicted. I felt terrible and didn’t want him to, so i lent him the 550 dollars he didn’t have to help him pay it. I told him not to feel rushed that he could just pay me back when he was ready. Since than he has gotten a job. He moved back home and has been working since August.
Well today i was texting him for advice. I thanked him and than about an hour later he gave me a little more advice. I didn’t think about it was a bit short answering back and he got upset. He told me not to ask for help anymore if i was gonna be like that. I got so mad because it seems so hypocritical for him to say that to me for something so small, when he hasn’t paid me one cent of what i lent him. I did tell him he could take his time paying me back, but i am going to school and have bills to pay. It makes me mad that he has been working for so long and hasn’t even tried to pay me anything back. I feel like he is taking major advantage of me, but i don’t want to tell him that since i had told him he didn’t have to rush into paying me. I kind of want to stop talking to him but i know than he will NEVER pay me. I don’t mean to be such a jerk about it but i took him shopping every week so he wouldn’t starve, i helped him find a job and i lent him that money. And than he gets mad at me for not being super grateful that he gave me his input. am i being a jerk or am i right?
I should also mention that i have told him several times how broke i am, and how i’m not sure how i’m gonna pay for school. He has said he knows he owes me and i did let him know its okay even if its just a small amount at a time. I just don’t wanna be mean but i feel like he should realize that i really need help right now.

It’s very easy to misread someones emotions in a text message… that’s no reason to end a friendship. Just apologize for the way it sounded and reassure him that you didn’t mean to sound short and ungrateful.
He might have forgotten that he even owes you money. Or maybe he thinks you forgot. Either way I would remind him… ask if he can start paying you back because you’re in a financial bind right now. Tell him he doesn’t have to come up with all of it all at once, but whatever he can give you out of each paycheck would be greatly appreciated. If he gets offended then you may just have to accept that you may never get that money from him.
It’s really a touchy subject when friends owe friends money… this is why I never do it.
