A biography of Jacques Cousteau

Jacques Cousteau: The Sea King
By Brad Matsen
Pantheon Books; 320 Pages; $27.95
THIRTY years ago Jacques-Yves Cousteau was reckoned to be one of the ten most recognised men in the world. This biography, uncritical but revealing, shows how that happened. Nominally a captain in the French navy, Cousteau spent most of his working life pioneering a new form of celebrity, that of the TV explorer. With his ship, the converted minesweeper Calypso, and a crew of divers with attractive French accents and film-star looks, he patrolled the more photogenic corners of the oceans and documented these exploits in books and television programmes that turned him into a global godfather of undersea adventure.

The secret of this success, explains Brad Matsen, the author of many books and articles about the sea, was nothing to do with the science of oceanography or indeed the science of anything. It was to do with television. In "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau", the documentary series that ran from 1968 and was shown all over the world, and its successor, "The Jacques Cousteau Odyssey", he hit on the thing of which every TV producer dreams: a near-perfect small-screen formula.

First there was the boat. With its attractive lines glowing a telegenic white against the dark ocean, Calypso was an enclosed world, a drama in itself. Then there was the technology. Cousteau was a genuine innovator, having had a hand in developing an underwater breathing apparatus as well as refining techniques for underwater filming and dreaming up nifty little one- or two-person submarines. Above all, he insisted that the technology looked good, especially on film. He was not competing with universities or research institutes but with "Thunderbirds" and James Bond.

And then came the adventure. Every episode made some claim to serious scientific purpose, but the demands of television docudrama meant that sharks, dolphins, whales and buried treasure made very frequent appearances in the schedule. Divers would descend, smiling and joking. Then, suddenly, there was danger–but you could be sure that in the end the divers would be back around the dining table, the wine would flow, and up on the bridge lit only by the ghostly glow of the radar scanner, Captain Cousteau would be plotting course for next week’s adventure.

So it may come as a surprise to those who grew up with the captain to find that in the years of his great celebrity, Cousteau was rarely on board the Calypso. He had a helicopter landing pad built on the ship which enabled him to fly in for an occasional hour or two of filming. Many episodes were actually a fricassee of archive footage spiced with more recent shots.

So where was the captain while Calypso roved? By the 1970s Cousteau was effectively a multinational CEO, dividing his time between lecturing, lobbying and raising money. He divided his time in other ways too: on the death of his wife Simone in 1990, the Cousteau children were surprised to discover that for almost 20 years their father had maintained in secret a second family–a family that now controls the Cousteau estate and legacy.

So what is Cousteau’s legacy? If you consult the index of "A History of Oceanography", a scholarly account published at the very height of his fame, you will find no entries at all under his name. His real contribution was to stoke the popular imagination with images of life beneath the surface of the seas, as seen by men in well-tailored diving gear.

This looks to be a book synopsis. The book is about Jacques Cousteau. It is written by Brad Matsen. The book for sale is rather long and is pretty expensive.

Movies that work with this same kind of premise?
Hey! My sister and I were talking about movies earlier. The movies we were talking about were ones where the main good guy character is the only one who knows that the one guy is a real jerk. The jerk has every one fooled into thinking he is a good guy too. Aah, I’m I explaining this well? A few movies that came to mind were the Cable Guy and Mr. Woodcock. I’m sure we are missing a bunch more. What other movies are similar to it? I know I forgetting one I watched recently, and it’s driving me crazy! Thanks so much!

Why am I so frightened by a picture?
Okay. So, around eight months ago, I saw the infamous smile.jpg picture. (For those of you who don’t know what it is, it is a picture of a VERY creepy smiling dog that supposedly drives you insane, if we are to take creepypastas as fact. You can Google it at your own risk.) It probably wasn’t even the "real" one, but it still scared me to death. Nowadays, I don’t go on any scary story sites until I’ve absolutely verified that no versions of the picture are on it. Actually, just last month, I was on a website that seemed pretty harmless (it was called something Scary for Kids), and, for some reason, I decided to click on the gallery of "scary pictures". Sure enough, under the category of "scary animals", was a version of smile.jpg. I immediately closed out of the window, shut down my computer, and walked outside. What are the reasons for this? Why do I have such an irrational fear?

It’s natural instinct. In reality, if that dog was really mean and such, and was coming after you, you’d be scared and probably run away. Well, even though it’s a picture, your brain is probably interpreting it in a similar way.
Jeff | Feb 07, 2010

HOLY SHIT that thing is fucking creepy I dont blame you for being afraid. It looks like a demon besides everyones afraid of something it’s just the way things are. Hell one person is afraid of pickels, a lady is afraid of cotton. You fear what you fear thats it.
Ruby | Feb 07, 2010

I googled it. I’ll hand it to whoever made it, the quality makes it kind of creepy. It’s not that bad though. I’ve had it where I’ve watched different animes or movie where something happened in them, and I only got scared about it later. Maybe you’ve just got a bit of a residual fright. Relax, it’ll go away eventually.
Chima | Feb 07, 2010

some one post a link to this dog picture because i cant find it to save my life lol.
BobJr's Final return | Feb 07, 2010

Because you’re supposed to be afraid of it. If you just came across the picture without the stories about people going insane, etc, I don’t think you would be nearly as afraid of it. It’s just a picture, but you’ve probably convinced yourself, subconsciously, that it’s more than that.

Should I text him? Guys and girls advice!?
So there is this guy I am interested in at my school. The way we met was a funny story but we ALWAYS seem to run into each other at random places, like we ran into each other at Ralphs twice already and we have all of these coincidences between us. Sometimes we text, and usually I text him first… but he’s really friendly. & when I see him in the hallway he usually gives me a wink or touches my arm or says hi real quick or nods his head. I was at a bball game and his ex was sitting by me and she kept staring at me giving dirty looks, but I don’t know if it’s because she knows we talk or if he’s mentioned me? Anyways, I don’t know if I should text him, or just not. I want to get to know him but I don’t want to seem needy or desperate. Help! What should I do?

Thanks. (:

If you want to communicate with him, I suggest you text him, call him, or talk to him in person. Relationships are founded on good communication. It is desperate to initiate a conversation.
J | Feb 08, 2010

I say go for it and if you guys become good friends and if he doesn’t have a girlfriend I would ask him out if you like him that much. Keep texting him and you shouldn’t care about the ex. So good luck!
Crystal | Feb 08, 2010

Forget about his EX, she’s his EX for a reason if she starts to cause trouble let him know and he can deal with her.
Sounds like he does like you though which is a good thing! You guys should share who messaging who first not just you because then yes you do seem needy and desperate and then he’ll do the typical guy thing and play hard to get.

Maybe wait and not messaging him for afew days and allow him to message you, if he asks why you haven’t messaged him just tell him the last few days have been flat out or you lost your mobile.

Guys should always message first remember that.

Lookout, The (2007)

IMDB rating: 7.40

Plot: An admired high school hockey player (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) with a bright future foolishly takes a drive in the night with his girl friend and two other friends with his headlights off with devastating results. The former athlete is left with a brain injury that prevents him from remembering many things for extended periods of time. To compensate, he keeps notes in a small notebook to aid him in remembering what he is to do. He also lives with a blind friend (Jeff Daniels) who aids him. Obviously, with the mental incapacitation, he is unable to have meaningful work. Thus he works as a night cleaning man in a bank. It is there he comes under the scrutiny of a gang planning to rob the bank. The leader (Matthew Goode) befriends him and gets him involved with a young woman (Isla Fisher) who further reels him in. After they get close and after reeling him in with his own failures, the bank plan unfolds. Confused but wanting to escape his current existence, he initially goes along with the scheme. After realizing he is being used, he attempts to stop the robbery, which of course immediately goes awry. Bruce McGill and Alberta Watson also co-star as the young man’s parents, who still search for the person that was there before the tragic crash.

Why did she use up the extra fuel to drive me around to lookout point?
Her car was making a loud clunking noise from the front wheels while going round a corner and she asked me to go along for a ride in the car with her so that I could hear the noise. The first corner we went around there was the noise so we went right around the block twice to confirm the noise happens during turning left and turning right.

Then she said well lets go for a run out to the lookout point (we live by the sea and our town has a small lookout area which added about an extra 7mins to the whole trip)

I have known her for the last 3 and a half years She has always been very friendly and talkative towards me most girls are not. Every time I am around her she is very happy, giggly and funny as anything

I couldn’t figure out what was making the noise in her car and the funny thing is she has never been bothered by it since.

She like me has very little money, why did she use up extra fuel driving around to the lookout point?

Maybe to thank you for the trouble? It’s not always like that you know. Don’t limit your thinking.

Plot: Brett, a young woman from the suburbs, is an associate editor at a small New York publishing house, hoping to be promoted when, on the same day, she meets a literary lion, Archie Knox, who’s 50 and who shows an interest in her, and gets a new boss, a dolly-dolly Brit. Brett is soon dating Archie, then moves in with him. He’s charming, attentive, and gives advice. He also has a history – ex-wives, a distant daughter, a couple of diseases, and a photo album of former girlfriends. It’s no fairy tale: family issues (and more) intervene, and Brett has decisions to make. Meanwhile, she’s working with a writer who fears peanut butter sticking to the roof of his mouth. Is Archie dinner, an hors d’oeuvre, or a peanut-butter sandwich?
