How do you hand crank a engine to test if it is seized?
Should it be reasonably easy to hand crank a 1976 Buick Lesabre Custom to test if the motor is seized? We had the starter tested and that is not the problem. What are the steps involved in hand cranking the engine, and if this does not work what are other things we can try to do to diagnose the problem and save the engine?? Thank you!
remove the spark plugs, if standard shift place in neutral, use a socket wrench on the crankshaft nut at the front of the engine to try to turn the engine over. it should turn easily if it doesn’t your in trouble. a second way is to use a spark plug air adapter to pressurize a cylinder that is near top dead center. the air pressure should turn the engine.

Firstly remove the spark plugs so there is no compression. Then place a large spanner on the nut of the crankshaft pulley and turn. With the plugs out it should turn quite easily.

These answers are overworking the problem. If you just grab the fan belt, you can turn the unstuck engine of a 1976 Buick. At least I can.
If the engine is stuck, you’ll be wondering if you just didn’t pull hard enough, since you don’t do this all the time. So if it’s stuck, you’ll want to put a wrench on the big bolt on the end of the crankshaft and try that.
It only takes probably 50 ft pounds, if that, to turn it over.
Removing spark plugs is not at all necessary or even appropriate for this test. It would be appropriate for a longer-term situation where you start filling the cylinders up with something in an attempt to get it unstuck.

Hand cranking an engine is easy, put a wrench on the nut that attaches the vibration damper to the crankshaft and give it a turn, if the engine is free you will know it immediately; lots easier if a couple spark plugs are removed first (compression pressure is reduced). If this does not work you may be looking at a tear down and rebuild. While you are pulling spark plugs look at the electrodes, if they show sign of rust oh this is not good. Means water has gotten into the combustion chamber(s) and now there is a potential problem which will cause some frustration and irritation. At this point if you are like me then it is best for the old lady and the kids to stand down, things are subject to growing wings. Best of luck.

That electrical system is rather simple.
What you want to do is remove the starter, reconnect all the cables and then bypass the relay(using a screw driver) the thing should spin.
If it does the wiring is good. If not you have one of the battery terminals off or loose ground/block wire, or bad fusible link.
Remove the spark plugs and then dump like a table spoon of oil down each cylinder. The engine might not be sized. But, the rings are probably rusted a bit to the cylinder walls and the oil will help save them.
Once you know all your wiring is good install the starter and bypass the relay again. There is no reason the engine should not crank at this point unless it is seized. or well you have internal issues.
Goodluck

Large socket on crankshaft damper nut will do it. You only need to turn it an inch or two to see if it is free. Don’t force it.

put a socket and breaker bar on the crank shaft and see if you can turn the engine over.
