When is it OK to Use Lethal Force?!?
Say there is a perp who has a hsotage by gunpoint in a public street. What basis do the police use to institute lethal force in this situation? What are the factors in deciding to take this guy out via sniper??!?

Anyone can use lethal force if they feel their life or the life of someone else is threatened.

In this case the perp can be shot legally.

Now you can only use enough deadly force to stop the perp, if he falls on the ground still alive, you cannot kill them unless they attempt to threaten again.

Scientific Community: Is this evidence for a creator?
I’m not saying it is, but I think it might be evidence for a creator: Information.

What is information? There are several definitions of information currently in use; however, each of these definitions are generally too broad. For example, one definition of information includes symbols with or without meaning, and another includes everything in its definition of information. Imagine sending a random symbols as smoke signals to your friend would Happy Birthday ever get sent to your mother on her birthday? In July 2006, a team of scientists representing various scientific disciplines met to evaluate a definition of information proposed by information scientist Dr. Werner Gitt, which is precise and corresponds very well to human languages and machine languages. The team proposed that this definition be called Universal Definition of Information (UDI) and agreed that there are four essential attributes that define it:

1.Code (syntax): Information within all communications systems contains a code. A code contains a set of symbols and rules for using letters, words, phrases, or symbols to represent something else. One reason for coding is to enable communication. Examples of codes would be the English Alphabet, words, and syntax; hieroglyphics; or codes used in computers (For example, C, Fortran, or Cobol).
2.Meaning (semantics): Meaning enables communication by representing real objects or concepts with specific symbols, words, or phrases. For example, the word chair is not the physical chair but represents it. Likewise, the name Bob is not the physical person but represents the real person. When words are associated with real objects or concepts, it gives the word meaning
3.Expected Action (pragmatics): Expected action conveys an implicit or explicit request or comment to perform a given task. For example, in the statement, Go to the grocery store and buy some chocolate chips, the expected action is that someone will go to the store. This does not mean the action will actually happen, but it is expected to happen.
4.Intended Purpose (apobetics): Intended purpose is the anticipated goal that can be achieved by the performance of the expected actions. For example, in the statement Go to the grocery store and buy some chocolate chips, the intended purpose might be to bake and eat chocolate chip cookies.

These four essential attributes specify the definition domain for information. A definition of information (Universal Definition of Information) was formulated by using these four attributes:

An encoded, symbolically represented message conveying
expected action and intended purpose.

Encoded Code
Symbolically represented message Meaning
Expected action Action
Intended purpose Purpose

Anything not containing all four attributes is not considered information by this Universal definition of Information (UDI).

Examples of entities that do contain Information (UDI):
The Bible
Newspaper
Hieroglyphics
Sheet Music
Mathematical formulas

Examples of entities that do not contain Information (UDI) (one of more of the attributes are missing).

A physical star: Lacks a code and lacks meaning because it does not represent something else; it is the physical object that the word star represents.

A physical snowflake: Lacks a code and lacks meaning because it does not represent something else; it is the physical object.

Random sequence of letters: Has a symbol set, but lacks rules for words or grammar (no code). Since it is random, it has no meaning to any sequence of letters

A physical piano: Lacks meaning because it does not represent something else; it is the physical object.

The lowest level of operational science begins with ideas originated and formulated by man. These include models, hypotheses, theories, assumptions, speculations, etc. This is the lowest level of scientific certainty because man’s understanding of reality is incomplete, faulty, and constantly changing. A very large gap exists between this level of science and the highest level. This highest level contains scientific laws.

Scientific laws are precise statements formulated from discoveries made through observations and experiments that have been repeatedly verified and never contradicted. There are scientific laws about matter (Newton’s law of gravity, laws of thermodynamics, laws of electricity, and laws of magnetism(. There is Pasteur’s law about life (law of biogenesis).

Each of these laws if universal with no known exceptions. Scientific evidence that supports or refutes a scientific concept determines its level of certainty.
The information team evaluated scientific laws about information formulated by Dr. Werner Gitt that determine that nature and origin of information [UDI].

———

where can I find summary for this ?!
Inglorious | Feb 07, 2010

Nope….and you really don’t get the second law at all. If you pump energy into a system it ends up more ordered. That’s how it works and what it says.

Just an FYI: most of Newton’s work has been replaced by General Relativity. If you want to try to sound intelligent you ought to at least be within fifty years of modern science.
Gazoo | Feb 07, 2010

All you’re saying is manmade codes have meaning to man. Yet you refute your own point by saying a snowflake is meaningless. If everything that hasn’t been made by man is meaningless, it refutes the idea of a creator.
There, Aladar and his family meet other dinosaurs for the first time as well as real dangers. The destruction caused by the meteor here has also forced a herd of different herbivores to move to a remote valley that can provide food and protection against the carnivorous predators following after. Since Aladar grew up with a different understanding of the ways of the world, his way of helping others first isn’t accepted within the herd, but soon it is proven that reason may be better than panic.

From 3 to 103! I’ve been to that show twice and it’s terrific. If your kid is afraid of, say, a sports event mascot, you should hold off… but as long as your child is old enough to reason that they’re not real and they’re not going to eat them, they’ll love it!

I have to write a monologue coming from a main character in any book I have read. It can really be anything, but I have to write it myself. I want to do Augusten from Running With Scissors. I want to expand a memory, or event that wasn’t completely explained in the book. I just don’t know what I should pick, or where to even begin. If you’re familiar with this book, could you help me?

Liver damage from alcohol. In ICU. Confusion. WILL HE MAKE IT..?
It’s my brother, he drank most of his life, then tried to stop on his own, and had a seizure and ended up in hospital, throwing up blood, and not breathing when he arrived at hospital so they intabated him. He seems very confused, he just looks to the ceiling, he looks very yellow. His kidneys were shutting down, but came back, but now he is back in ICU because his BP & Heart rate dropped. whats next?

I am a psychic and work with the living and with their relation to death. He will live no doubt about it but will be slow after this I mean like his brain will slow and he will find it harder to gather knowledge and do things. Your brother carries deep resentment to one or both of your parents he may have been abused but his alcoholism is a symptom of that. He needs serious counseling if not he will do this again because he feels depressed and doesn’t see the point of his life. He carries other ppls crap and needs to let go.
He’s still withdrawing. He’ll probably have more episodes, like seizures, fevers, heart palpitations/attacks/arrhythmia, tremors, and possibly hallucinations or be just be really "out of it". The fact that his kidneys are coming back is a good thing though. It means his body doesn’t want to just give up, his body is TRYING to get through this. And that’s honestly a good sign, even though there’s a rough road ahead.
Make sure you or someone else can stay in the hospital with him as much as possible. Patients get better care from medical providers when they have people by their side, who are looking out for them as advocates, especially in situations where substance abuse is the reason for someone being hospitalized.
James | Feb 02, 2010

				JY,
here is my list. And since you made it a point to include one Admiral (Horatio Nelson) I will add my one Admiral as well. This is fun stuff! I am also going onto two sides of the coin. I tell you this in advance because some on my list may be controversial; however, their battle field presence of mind and tactics cannot be questioned. My list is also comprised of nothing further back than the 19th Century. I agree with your list and the inclusion of ancient warriors; I just don’t think I have to dive back that deep in time. Personal choice mind you and again is nothing personal.

1. General Robert E. Lee; (Most beloved General by his men in the history of the United States).
2. General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson; (Arguably the best artillery officer and tactician the U.S. had in the last half of the 19th century).
3. General Wm. Tecumseh Sherman; (In WW II the Sherman tank was named after him; his accomplishments during the War Between the States speaks for itself).
4. Lt. General Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller; the highest decorated U.S. Marine in the 235+ years of the Marine Corps. His service during the Chosin Reservoir (Korea) exemplifies his duty to his men and to his country.
5. General Bernard Law Montgomery; (as much as I hate to mention this guy) his ability in North Africa was unquestionably superb. Though, his criticisms of Eisenhower, Patton, et al I believe were unwarranted. (Personal opinion on this last sentence).
6. General Heinz Guderian; (I consider him to be a better tank commander than Rommel). Father of the "Blitzkrieg" he would be exonerated and pardoned following the Nuremburg trials. Each of his interrogations the interrogators would come a way with an understanding that he was "a professional soldier" in every sense of the word. Too bad this guy was a Nazi; he could have helped us end WW II for our side much sooner.
7. Marshall Georgy Zhukov; (Stalins only saving grace). Zhukov would kick the Japanese "giggy" so bad in 1939 that when Hitler declared war on the U.S.A., the Japanese would recall this and not proceed with attacking the USSR. The USSR in the meantime would not want to open their own "Eastern Front" with Japan because of the whooping they took from the Japanese in 1905.
8. General Vo Nguyen Giap; (North Viet Nam). Another fellow I love to "hate" as I know many American Viet Nam veterans. Based on the fact that I am "attempting" to be objective; here is where I now draw the line. Simply don’t want to give this guy any more "credit"; Giap was the only thing "Uncle Ho" had going for him.
9. General Francois de Negrier; French Army ~ long story here too but most interesting to me is his lead of the French Foreign Legion in which he states "Vous, legionnaires, vous etes soldats pour mourir, et je vous envoie ou l

Have you noticed…?
how certain composers (Liszt, Beethoven,…) keep repeating a certain bunch of piano techniques in their pieces? For instance, contemplating a couple beethoven sonatas, I see broken octaves (is that the term?) in every single piece. There are these movements in a lot of Liszt Rhapsodies where right hand plays big intervals. There is this same part in Grand Gallope Chromatique (spelling?).

Mostly, composers who weren’t brilliant pianists themselves seem more creative because in my opinion they are not bound to anything while composing. They don’t have any limitations. They just compose. Like Debussy.

The question is the title.

			No, I did not

Yes, I have, some classical artists like to have 3 different melodies throughout the piece, then play them all overlapped at the end, and it sounds amazing.

yes I thought I was the only one that noticed it
Shameeka W | Oct 14, 2007

No I haven’t noticed but it’s sounds interesting. I am not a musician but I have heard some of the terms you mention. You’ve prompted me to do a bit of research on my own to learn more. Have a nice day.
my2cents793 | Oct 14, 2007

Yes, it’s their personal style. Is why some people like Bach better than Debussy. Or Vivaldi better than Brahms.

				Yes I have.

I admit, I do the same whilst composing..
I use some of the same techniques from prior songs.

But it’s that composer’s way of composing. Unique to them.
I’m not quite sure but I do notice those big jumps of the right hand back and forth that liszt does in grand gallop chromatique and Hungarian rhapsody no 2. And of course his super fast trills.
I think your argument is a little suspect. Authorities such as Nadia Boulanger had a high regard for his abilities at the piano and Marguerite Long who worked with Debussy on all of his major works, said he was an ‘incomparable pianist.’ In other words just because he chose not to be a performer per se, that does not mean that he wasn’t a brilliant pianist. Beethoven’s sonatas are not remarkable for their common techniques, they are remarkable because they are the greatest example of music of their genre. Beethoven’s only limitation was the instruments he played.
Yes I have. And it’s their personal style. I tend to also repeat the same kind of characters for melodies and accompaniments when I compose for school projects or for fun. It just reflects my personality and gives my pieces their unique stamps. And I can do a lot of different things to them. Same goes for famous compoers. Just because they keep repeating the same techniques doesn’t mean they weren’t creative. There’s a lot they can do with just a few different techniques, if you haven’t noticed. Think Bach. His compositions all have lots of scales and continuous notes, but look at his preludes and fugues. They’re some of the most remarkable compositions in history. You wouldn’t say Bach was not creative, would you? And he was a really skilled harpsichordist/organist.
