What do conservatives think of use of our use of mercenaries in Iraq?
Apparently, we have roughly as many mercenaries in Iraq as we do troops.
http://www.blackwaterbook.com/news/2007/ 01/test.html

A couple of problems with their use is they are paid ten times as much as regular military (hardly a savings through privatization), and worse, they are accountable to no one.

If a soldier commits a war crime, he is subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice at least. Mercs are not. At most, mercs will usually be re-assigned out of the theater.

In Bosnia, mercs were caught running a sex slave ring and one even video’d himself raping a woman. They were never prosecuted.

In Iraq, interrogations are often done by these guys to sidestep the UCMJ and possible war crimes charges.

Some taped themselves shooting at random cars in Iraq.

Is this how we want the world to see us?
for those who think they are "only" doing security, think about which of our troops are in the line of fire. A lot of people have been killed by IEDs while driving trucks and humvees.

If you read the links I put up, they you’ll see that they get in protracted fire fights with insurgents, and those burning bodies hung from the bridge in Fallujah were Blackwater mercenaries.

The difference from the past is the sheer number we are using.

In many cases, after misdeeds, they are NOT fired, just reassigned (like Catholic priests).

Mercenaries have always been used but usually because the war in question doesn’t inspire citizens to volunteer.

While a lot of these guys are former American special forces, they are also drawing white South Africans and others unconcerned about niceties of human rights.

Some other countries think the practice is harmful enough that they signed a treaty saying they won’t use them. The US didn’t sign.

Jeeper, we do pay them directly to gaurd diplomats, Iraqis cooperating with us, and when they do interrogations and the like.

Even if they were hired by other contractors, we are paying the contractor for that indirectly through the total price tag for the job or directly if the have a cost-plus contract which means we reimburse them for all their cost plus add a percentage of profit on top of that–a system that leads to Halliburton burning trucks with flat tires and buying new ones to rack up costs and therefore profits.

As a soldier they should pay us what they are making at blackwater

When there contract is up they are done. They are not eligible for benefits, retirement, medical, or education. They do not get the vacation nor the support the active duty receive either. If there is a personal problem they are fired. Very simple. They are contractors. Many companies, corporations, and even government agencies are going to this type of employee. Actually much more cost effective in the long run.

I think it is a waste of money and it’s just a way to keep down the number American lives lost in Iraq. They don’t tell us how many of the mercenaries or other defense contractors that have been killed.

This is obviously ludicrous, yet Leogirl & perhaps other Republicans support this mercenary force because it’s privatized or because it’s Bush-backed????

This should not be a partisan issue. Whether we are in Iraq or not, mercs should be held accountable for their actions, just like (supposedly) everybody else.

If a woman is raped or other atrocities are committed by a private contractor (eg torture at Abu Gharaib), they shouldn’t just "be fired" as Leogirl suggests, and "problem solved".

How would Leogirl like it if she was raped, and then the rapist was just simply fired from his job????? This is why extreme conservative Republicans don’t have any reputation for compassion. They seem to be emotionally incapable of putting themselves in the shoes of other people.

It’s nothing new. There have been mercs around as long as there have been wars. We have employed mercenaries in every conflict we have ever had in one theater or another. whether they are Native american, French, Mexican, Phillipino, Montagnard, or blackwater. It’s addressed in article 1 section 8 paragraph 11 of the U.S. Constitution, Letters of Marque and Reprisal. Getting upset about it now is like getting p.o.ed about Fort Sumpter.

I think maybe you need to go look up the definition of mercenary.

You really have a problem with private companies hiring security guards in Iraq ?

Mercenaries conduct operations.

The contractors in Iraq, are security guards.

That’s a huge difference.

And contrary to your post, All contractors in Iraq, are subject to the UCMJ.

And what do you care how much they are paid ?

The US government isn’t paying them.

Companies with contracts in Iraq, are not allowed to bill the government for the cost of security guards.

So, if the companies doing business in Iraq, want to take their own money and hire security guards, what issue could you have in that?

You can call them mercenaries all you want to, that doesn’t make them mercenaries.

Anymore than the security guard at walmart, or any other company inside the US are mercenaries.

welcome to the real world.

most of those "mercs" are vets so they know what they are doing, and its a good way for them to be paid for the service they are poorly paid for when in service, and the other good thing is they are not accountable to the dang politicians and can kill at will.
