In the film "American Psycho":Why are so many cases of mistaken identity?
I mean Paul Allen mistakes Patrick Bateman for Marcus Helberstram.
Batemen’s lawyer mistakes someone else for Paul Allen.
There are a couple more that I can’t recall.
That’s actually a big part of the point of the film. The movie is about how shallow everyone has become, no one cares about one another anymore, not even enough to remember each other’s names. They all look alike, talk alike, have the same job titles (remember the business cards all the same job on those) and eat at the same restaurants.
Bateman does really kill all those people (this is made clear in the book and the director and author have both made the point very clear that they intended for the killings to be real). He gets away with it because no one cares enough to be bothered to notice anyone is missing, people are too concerned with themselves.
In the book each character is first described top to bottom, brand of clothing, wear they get their hair cut etc. then are named but most of the time the name is wrong. These people are disgustingly shallow.
This movie is meant to be satire, it’s not a just some horror film about a serial killer, that’s more of the side plot.

I truly believe that its an indicator to the viewer that while Bateman is a sick SOB, the serial killing is all in his head. He is just completely out of touch with reality and anything we have seen in the entire film can be just a part of the main characters diseased brain.
He’s a sick F**k to be sure, but the killing might have all been in his warped mind.

It could also be that all these guys act alike, dress alike, even have the same business cards in one scene. Maybe that’s partly the reason Bateman was acting out or fantasized about acting out. Don’t remember the characters name he lures to his place and axes him but I believe that he had enough of him trying to be like him.
