A question about the tragic attack at Ft Hood; is the killer a Muslim terrorist or a man with combat stress?
I feel bad for all the families who lost loved ones but also feel a little worried for my own situation. Soon my beloved will be entering the Army and going to Basic Training and then after to Advanced Infantry Training. He goes in in January and I will not see him again until the beginning of Summer next year. My only contact will be US Mail!! Currently we are engaged and will tie the knot in December at a wedding chapel in Reno Nevada.

Here is my concern. My beloved will have to go to various places while he is processing in the Army. Will they provide armed security to keep terrorists from launching an attack? also will they screen people of the Islamic Religion to make sure they are not terrorists? Finally, if he ultimately goes to Afghanistan (Horrors!!) and then comes back will they provide security at the processing station to make sure that he or someone else in there does not "go off the deep end"? Also will my then husband change and if we have a baby will he be someone I don’t recognize as my lover who is kind and gentle and loves family as much as I do?

Security at our military bases is already pretty high, and overseas, it’s much much higher. The military is not a career without risks. Your husband knew this when he signed up.

However, Hasan is a US soldier. He is not some foreign agent sent to infiltrate our country or anything like that. All the security in the world would not have prevented what Hasan did, because no one had any reason to suspect him. He also happens to be a Muslim. That does not make him a terrorist. In fact, it’s not even that important piece of information. Who cares what his religion is? That doesn’t change what he did.

He hadn’t seen any combat, so this wasn’t a combat stress disorder. The investigation is still ongoing to find out what caused him to do what he did. At this point, about all we do know is that he was scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan, and that he didn’t want to go. He had moral objections about it, and was trying to get out of the military. He was a doctor, and had been interacting with soldiers who were returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. Apparently the things they told him led to his growing uneasiness about being in the army.

As for your husband, the army and veterans hospital facilities provide extensive psychological facilities to help soldiers returning from the field re-adjust to civilian life. Most are able to make the transition with no long term after-effects or stress disorders. I believe they also provide some counseling services for the family of soldiers as well, if you’re so freaked out about everything you may want to contact them and see what they can do for you as well.

To answer your title question… Hasan can’t be a victim of combat stress… he never saw combat. So whatever his problem… it’s not that.

As to your fiance’s safety. I suspect for the immediate future, security will be very high around troop processing stations. The military may be slow to learn a lesson, but it will learn them. As to whether your future husband will change while overseas. That’s a hard question to answer. It will depend on the experiences he has over there and how prepared he is for those experiences. What YOU need to do while waiting for his return is get involved in wives support groups on base. I guarantee you’ll find such groups. Learn from them about what to expect and how to react. It will make the transition for both you and your husband much easier.

Good luck

that last thing you asked, in the end, that’s what you really have to worry about.

I haven’t seen any credible evidence linking the Ft. Hood shooter as a terrorist. I don’t think it was stress – maybe. I think it could have been avoided if people bothered to ask questions and monitor him closely.

What about Skype? My brother and his wife communicate via Skype as well as U.S. mail and I think email.

Maj Hassan was counseling returning soldiers with PTSD or shell shock. I prefer shell shock even though it’s an older term b/c it’s more descriptive and doesn’t seek to reduce the severity. I doubt he was a terrorist. This seemed to be all about him.

I think you need to think positive and not let fear drive you mad. There is little that you can do so why not think good thoughts. It’s a risky thing that he is doing. I would focus on the positives – try to keep things in reality. I think it is the only way to get through this even though it will be most difficult.

A support group could be helpful but only if it is a positive one. It might be better to surround yourself with friends and family.

Does he have to go? I wouldn’t want any of my family going to war. I think Maj. Nidal Hasan has a little of both Muslim terrorist and just plain old stress. He, well is a terrorist. I would think all families are to be concerned. As far as combat stress, he doesn’t qualify for that, but many others do. A lot of soliders come back with severe mental problems. I pray your husband is the exception.
