survey: Do you like horror game?and which types do you prefer?
Generally there are two different game genres: Asian style such as games similar to Japanese horror movies like the Grudge, the Ring etc.Fatal Frame(Project Zero) series and Siren series should be the best examples. Most stories of these games happen in obsolete haunted houses accompanying horror environment such as dim candle light strange sound and ghosts.(Maybe Silent Hill can be categorised into this genre)

The other type is those games containing explicit violence and gore etc. Dead Rising,Saw the game,L4D,Cursed Mountain,Condemned,Alone in the Dark are the best examples.

Personally, I prefer the former because it gives me chill into bone, especially Fatal Frame I,II and III.

I agree- being scared is, to me, the feeling of unease, discomfort, and suspense, and games about gore and violence are rarely effective at being scary. Even Resident Evil is more "startling" than scary.

There are moments in the games "Scratches", "Sanitarium", "Clock Tower" (the original Snes game, unreleased in the USA), the first Silent Hill, and Siren that are just utterly creepy. Wow, I guess games that start with S are scary, lol.

Dead Rising may be fun as hell, but I’ll never forget being stalked by dead children in a school at night like I did in Silent Hill. Nor will I forget a moment in the sequel, which was a better game but not as scary, which is why moments like this stand out: You’re in an abandoned underground prison. You walk into one of the cells, decorated with scribbled drawings. Suddenly you hear something walking around you. You run out of the cell and look around. James locks on to something offscreen. You can’t see what it is, but he can. It’s making big, slow steps back and forth, and it sounds like it’s whispering at you. This only happens in THAT room, and you NEVER get to find out what it is. That’s just creepy. Not knowing what’s out there.

Same theory works with horror movies too- there are fun bloody slasher movies, and then there’s the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Jacob’s Ladder- movies that are scary because of the sense of unease and suspense they cause.

Yes! survival-horror is my favourite genre of gaming! My favourites would have to be Silent Hill and recently Dead Space due to the fact that it’s the only franchise still around that is sticking to the core of the survival-horror genre and I can’t wait for Dead Space 2 (which is looking likely to be revealed within the next couple months).

As for what my favourite type of horror is, I would have to say psychological horror like Silent Hill. I find it so brilliant because it creates sounds and scenarios that plays with your mind and eventually takes over your emotions (such as fear) and instead of you playing the game, the game ends up playing you. By creating the most terrifying and obscure sound effects and by teasing you with fear by making you think something will go wrong (or won’t) at a particular point but instead it doesn’t (or does) psychological horror is one of the most powerful genres of media around.
