Maximum Overdrive (1986)

Plot: When the tail of rogue comet Rhea-M passes through Earth’s atmosphere, humanity’s worst nightmares come to life as machines gradually develop minds of their own, turning on their creators in bloody rebellion. At the Dixie Boy truck stop just outside Wilmington, North Carolina, both workers and patrons alike are coming to grips with the horror as a series of increasingly bizarre accidents occur, some injurious, some near-fatal, and some fatal. The terror finally comes to a head when the parked trucks – led by one for a toy company which sports a demonically-smiling goblin face – each start up on their own, circling the truck stop and preventing anyone from getting in or out. Trapped by the trucks and an emotionless manager (’Pat Hingle’ (qv)), a young ex-con (’Emilio Estevez’ (qv)) takes it upon himself to lead the rescue of anyone in the immediate vicinity who’s life is in danger, and to ultimately escape the truck stop and head to safety. Unfortunately, things become more complicated when a machine-gun-mounted mobile platform orders each of the humans to pump gasoline for the trucks. Pitted against an army of machines demonized by an unknown phenomenon, the people trapped in the Dixie Boy truck stop must use stealth and a concealed arsenal to escape. In the meantime, they realize that there is more to the tail of Rhea-M than they initially thought.

For those parents who are cooking dinner this Thanksgiving?
A few questions for those parents out there that are cooking the family turkey. Me and my brother are cooking dinner this year at my dads house. Not the first time for me but it will be for my brother, he lives 500 miles away but we’ve been texting while watching the food network all day.
1) When did you go grocery shopping or when do you plan on it?
I think I’m going shopping tonight or tomorrow but it’s going to be a mad-house I know it. I’ve got to save getting the vegetables until 2 or so days before because fresh green beans sometimes go bad fast and I want mine fresh as can be.
2)How many people are you cooking for?
5 adults and 2 kids.
3)How are you cooking your turkey? Do you plan on brining it, deep frying or just roasting?
I’m going to brine and roast the turkey with lots of butter under the skin.
4)Is your recipe a family/traditional one or do you go looking for Martha or food network type recipes?
like I said, I’ve been on martha/foodnetwork.com all day. Just meshing ideas, I think I know what I’m going to do but I see so many amazing looking recipes that I get frazzled because I just can’t decide.
@it’s a girl – being pregnant on thanskgiving is the best!
1) We went grocery shopping on the 13th. We use stuff that can be frozen or we will just pick it up maybe Wednesday.
2) 6-8 adults and 2-3 kids (a few people don’t know if they will make it).
3) My husband is making the turkey in an oven bag with some butter, onion, flour, and other spices. He makes it every year.
4) Our recipe is one that he learned by trial and error. He has grown up with his grandmother who caters for a living. So, everything is going to be homemade with Grandma’s recipes or advice.

and we will have about 10 people we have like 4 turkeys!!
AND ME AND My man "Sorry cap lock" we are gong to deep fry ours this year 
1 out of 3 tho the others will be stuffed and baked
And my mans dad he home makes the mash potato’s and stuffing
but i get stove top for me and him because it has more flavor to it
Honestly home making stuff does not make it any better
its as good store bought to me
I AM SOO excited for thanksgiving

1. I have 2 fresh turkeys in the fridge. The rest of the food (other than apple pie) will be brought by the other 35 people showing up. We’re also having ham, and I found out today someone is bringing a haunch of roasted venison.
2. 35 so far. Mostly adults, but a few kids.
3. Brining both. I’m a big Alton Brown fan, but I don’t really follow his recipes for turkey. I’ll make one turkey sweeter by tucking some brown sugar and aromatics under the skin as well as in the cavity (orange and pineapple slices, cranberries, apples, etc.). The other will be savory with using Rosemary and thyme and sage under the skin and in the cavity. I don’t do stuffing in the bird – only on the side. I cook the turkey breast side down so all the fat drips that way which keeps it moist. I seal it up really well while it cooks and be sure to let it rest at least 20 minutes before slicing so the juices have a chance to stabilize.
4. Recipe is just made up. We’ll see how it goes.

We’re sharing Thanksgiving cooking with some of the family, so we’re just making the stuffing/dressing, a salad, and probably some green beans and candies.

Deterrence (1999)

Plot: After the death of the President, his successor (Kevin Polack) is on the campaign trail to be re-elected. On a stop in Colorado, he is suddenly snowed in and he and his entourage are forced to take shelter in a small diner. Of course, the group completely take over from the diner’s owner (Badja Djola) and his French-Canadian waitress (Clotilde Courau). Also in the diner is a local redneck (Sean Astin) and a married couple. Suddenly, the movie moves into a suspense film as the President learns that Iraq has invaded Kuwait and slaughtered hundreds of American soldiers. Setting up temporary communications, the President announces that he will launch a nuclear attack on Iraq immediately if the country does not withdraw. Iraq reacts that they have 23 nuclear missiles trained on the US that they are ready to launch. Tensions mount with the involved civilians offering a different viewpoint to the President from the normal opinions of his advisors.

What do you think of paralyzing genitals with botox as a voluntary alternative to prison for sex offenders?
I think it might be possible to use botox injections to permanently disable the sexual functions of a person’s genitalia, meaning that they would be less inclined to commit a sexual crime or even be unable to commit certain sex crimes in the future. A botox injection would be non-invasive and in some cases, a sex offender who wants to control their urges might actually like the idea of being able to prevent themselves from harming others this way, so it doesn’t violate the 8th amendment(cruel and unusual punishment). And of course there’s the benefit of not using up our prison cells, and provided that there is still some prison time(a reduced sentence) for sex offenders who participate, there will still be deterrence.
I love the idea, when these creeps go to prison they are placed in protective custody and get to live like kings. I think a bullet between the eyes is more effective, but your ideas works too.
