Well, the jeans, first of all. If you have a little sister or a cousin with Barbie dolls, ask if you can have a pair of the Barbie jeans, or you could try searching discount stores or thrift stores for a pair of them. Alternatively, you could make some if you’re handy with a needle. Make sure they fit the description in the book (as in NOT rolled up, etc.). If you’re doing a large book cover on a poster board, you could find baby or toddler jeans instead. Just make sure they’re not child-like with ruffles or Tigger patches or anything.

Make a teensy letter like the ones the girls sent to each other each time they swapped the jeans. You can get really fancy with this and make it on the computer, typing out one of the girl’s actual letters, shrinking it down to a tiny font, and printing it out and cutting it out (your teacher will be very impressed), or you could just cut a rectangle of paper and scribble some lines on it.

Get a momento from each of the gals; for example, you could get a small soccer ball or a sweat band for the sporty girl (give me a break; it’s been a few years since I read them), a spiked wrist band or a colorful wig for the punky girl, a plane for the one visiting her divorced other half of her family, and a tube of lip gloss or some Grecian thing for the one visiting Greece. Come up with a list of objects to personify each of them or each of their trips and use that.

Be creative with everything. For the soccer ball, use a golfball and paint black patches on it for the small cover or a baseball for the large cover. A few pieces of purple yarn in a magnificent hairdo suffice for a wig, and a ribbon with dabs of silver or white paint will look like a spiked bracelet (make the dabs look like Hershey’s Kisses).

Best of luck!
