If you loved “Romancing The Stone”, and can hardly pass the TV without stopping to recognize when it’s on, then go ahead and follow the adventures of Jack, Joan and Ralph in Africa in “Jewel Of The Nile”. It may not stand up to the repeated viewings like RTS, but it is a fun and action packed sequel, and it is the characters that we have approach to like, that perform us want to view them in action in a modern and different record.
Joan(Kathleen Turner) and Jack(Michael Douglas) have been living together on his boat for six months already. Jack wants to retract off and notice the world, Joan has a bit of a writer’s block and wants more from life. Opportunity knocks on her door when a noteworthy Sheik wants her to write his chronicle. She’s wisked off to Africa, leaving a brooding Jack late, and immediatley finds herself in the midst of a mysterious, racy and very hazardous situtation challenging an all remarkable “Jewel”. But have no scare, Jack is warned of the exertion his beloved is in and is off to effect her. Ralph( Danny DeVito),who has been lurking about and hears the word “Jewel” is not going to be left out this time, and tags along as well. An added bonus to this one are the amazing Flying Karamazov Brothers juggling troupe, who jazz up this film a petite with their bright skills.

I probably would go a microscopic higher then 3 stars if I was honest rating the film, but I was a bit disappointed in the DVD transfer(especially compared to RTS) . It didn’t seem like remarkable care went into it. The film is presented in widescreen, which is really nice, and takes in all the action and scenery nicely, and even the colors were nice and shimmering, but the print was below average for a film of this age(1985) . It seemed grainey at times, and I often noticed scratches and even dirt. Obedient sound in Dolby Surround, but with all the action and adventure in this film, DD5.1 would have been tall.
The film may also be viewed in French and has subtitles in English and Spanish.
Fans of the first film, will certainly savor spending more time with the gang, but may want to judge renting it first, if you haven’t seen it yet.
Get the Popcorn ready, and maybe some lemonade..it’s a hot coast through the desert!…appreciate…Laurie
