Books that don't take place in North America?
I need a good book that doesn’t take place in Canada or the States
already read Memoirs of a Geisha The Kite Runner, a thousand splendid suns, the in-between worlds of Vikram Lall and the other boleyn girl
its for advanced english so it has to be a really good one! lol oh and I cant do anything like Dracula
thanks so much!!
cathrl69 the class is advanced english and i was asking for recommendations for novels that were well written and worth reading. I want to read a novel that is meaningful, not just any novel published outside of Canada.
There are 2 very good books by Swedish writer, Stieg Larsson, and both have been translated to English. They take place in Stockholm, Sweden. One is called "The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo" and the other one is "The Girl who Played with Fire." Of the two, I preferred "The Girl who Played with Fire."

Almost every single book ever published in the UK?
Surely someone capable of "advanced English" could think of that?

Read "Cry, the Beloved Country", which takes place in South Africa. Or "The Hero’s Walk", which takes place in India. Or "Doctor Zhivago", which takes place in Russia.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad (Europe and mostly the Congo)
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe (Nigeria)
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (Germany and Switzerland)
All three are good and relativley short but provide a lot of material for commentary. Also commonly read at the university/college level.

Lord of the Flies!
A Tale of Two Cities
Life of Pi
The Invisible Man
The War of the Worlds
The Scorpion God
The Day of the Triffids
I’ve read Lord of the Flies and Invisible Man but some of these books are books I am looking forward to read. I am sure all of them hold great stories as they are pretty well known.

Any of the books of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, especially ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE
Also, the novels of Isabel Allende, Jorge Luis Borges, Italo Calvino, Franz Kafka (like THE TRIAL), Victor Hugo (LES MESIBLES), SHOGUN by James Clavell (feudal Japan), and there are lots of mysteries that take places in Europe: Cara Black (Paris), Iain Rankin (Edinburgh), etc

You can read "Say You’re One of Them". It’s a collection of fictional short stories that take place in Africa. From what I’ve heard it’s pretty good and lots of people are reading it. The Diary of Anne Frank, The Reader, The Bonesetter’s Daughter.
Also, I read A Thousand Splendid Suns and it was AMAZING, I loved it so much.
